Eco-friendly Earth Day Magic For Cat Lovers
Eco-friendly Earth Day Magic For Cat Lovers by Layla Morgan Wilde
When I watch my cat Odin cavorting in nature, sniffing the earth and air, I smile at his joy. At this time of year where we live in Westchester County, everything blooms green overnight. It’s like magic. And no matter how many years I’ve created an Earth Day Post, it never gets old.
Whiskers a-twitch, tails held high,
On Earth Day, the cats reach for the sky.
They roam the fields with silent grace,
Embracing nature’s wondrous place.

Earth Day Is More Purrfect With Cats
New Reason Eco-friendly Cats Love Trees On Earth Day
This year I’ve been taking lots of photos and videos as usual but also something new. I’m loving creating video collages on Pinterest so of course, I had to make a couple for Earth Day. Plus some cute cards with limericks. This is a fun, time released one.
Pause the video to read the tips.
It’s at this time of year I’m feeling especially nostalgic. It marks the time just before I launched Cat Wisdom 101 and the death of my beloved Merlin.
So sweet and deserving of a do-over.
Purrfect feline friends,
Bask in nature’s glory,
Earth Day delights.
For an eco-friendly Earth Day for cat lovers. Fun things to do with your cat.
Earth Day is a great opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature with your cat while also being mindful of the environment. Here are some outdoor activities that you can do with your cat to celebrate Earth Day in an eco-friendly way:
- Go on a Nature Walk: If your cat is leash trained, take your cat on a nature walk in a local park or nature reserve. Not too adventurous? You’re back yard will do. Allow your cat to explore and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural environment. Keep your cat on a leash and be mindful of local regulations and wildlife habitats to ensure that you’re being responsible and respectful to the environment.
- Have a Picnic: Pack a sustainable picnic for yourself and your cat and head to a scenic outdoor spot. Bring eco-friendly reusable containers for food and water, and choose locally sourced, organic, and sustainable snacks for yourself and your cat. Enjoy a meal together in nature while reducing your carbon footprint and supporting local farmers.
- Plant a Cat-Friendly Garden: As mentioned earlier, planting a cat-friendly garden can be a great way to celebrate Earth Day with your cat. Cats love to explore and play in nature, and having a designated cat-friendly space in your garden can provide them with a safe and stimulating outdoor environment. Plant catnip, cat grass, or other feline-friendly plants that are safe for cats to interact with and enjoy.
- Participate in a Beach or Park Cleanup: Earth Day is a perfect time to give back to the environment by participating in a beach or park cleanup. You can take your cat along, but make sure to keep them on a leash and provide them with a safe and secure carrier or harness. Pick up litter and debris, and properly dispose of them in designated waste receptacles. This activity not only helps keep the environment clean, but also protects wildlife from ingesting harmful debris.
- Practice Leave No Trace Principles: When spending time outdoors with your cat, make sure to follow the Leave No Trace principles, which are guidelines for responsible outdoor recreation. These principles include packing out all trash, minimizing campfire impacts, respecting wildlife, staying on designated trails, and being considerate of other visitors. By practicing Leave No Trace, you’re helping to preserve the natural environment for future generations, including local wildlife.
- Play Eco-Friendly Games: Get creative and come up with eco-friendly games to play with your cat outdoors. Repurpose a cardboard box with fun cut-outs. For Hide treats or toys in biodegradable or reusable containers for your cat to find and interact with. You can also play fetch with a biodegradable or compostable toy, or create an obstacle course using natural materials like sticks and leaves. These games are not only fun for your cat, but also promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact.
- Educate Others: Use Earth Day as an opportunity to educate others about the importance of being eco-friendly pet owners. Share your knowledge about sustainable cat care practices with fellow cat owners, friends, and family members. You can also share tips on social media or participate in local Earth Day events to spread awareness about the impact of cats on the environment and how we can minimize it.
Remember, when spending time outdoors with your cat, always prioritize their safety and well-being. Keep them on a leash or in a secure carrier or harness, provide them with plenty of water and shade, and be mindful of their behavior and comfort level. By celebrating Earth Day with your cat in an eco-friendly way, you’re not only having fun together, but also taking positive steps towards protecting our planet for future generations.
More eco-friendly tips for your cat on Earth Day
As cat lovers, we have a responsibility to not only care for our furry feline friends, but also to be mindful of the impact they can have on the environment. With Earth Day just around the corner, it’s a great time to think about how we can celebrate this special day with our indoor and outdoor cats in an eco-friendly way. Here are some fun tips to help you and your cat make a positive impact on the planet while celebrating Earth Day.
- Opt for Eco-Friendly Cat Toys: Cats love to play, and toys are an essential part of their enrichment. However, many cat toys are made from plastic or harmful dyes which can contribute to environmental pollution. Instead, choose eco-friendly cat toys made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton, hemp, or recycled materials. You can find a wide variety of eco-friendly cat toys online or in specialty pet stores.
- Create a DIY Cat Tree: Cat trees provide a great outlet for cats to scratch, climb, and play. However, store-bought cat trees are often made from materials that are not environmentally friendly, such as particleboard or PVC. Instead, consider making your own cat tree using sustainable materials like reclaimed wood or bamboo. Not only will you be reducing waste, but you’ll also have a unique cat tree that your feline friend will love.
- Use Eco-Friendly Cat Litter: Cat litter can be harmful to the environment, as most traditional cat litters are made from clay, which is a non-renewable resource and requires extensive mining. Instead, opt for eco-friendly cat litters made from recycled paper, corn, or wheat, which are biodegradable and sustainable. These litters are not only better for the environment but also safer for your cat’s health.
- Plant a Cat-Friendly Garden: If you have an outdoor cat, consider planting a cat-friendly garden in your yard. Cats love to explore and play in nature, and having a designated cat-friendly space can help reduce their impact on local wildlife. Planting catnip, cat grass, or other feline-friendly plants can provide your cat with a safe and stimulating outdoor environment while also supporting local biodiversity. Beware of lilies and other toxic plants.
- Choose Sustainable Cat Food: The food we feed our cats can also have an impact on the environment. Look for cat food brands that use sustainable and ethically sourced ingredients. Consider opting for cat food made from humanely raised or organic meat, and avoid products that contain endangered or overfished species. You can also consider making your own cat food using locally sourced ingredients to reduce your carbon footprint and support local farmers.
- Reduce Waste with Reusable Cat Products: Cats require a variety of products, such as food and water bowls, litter boxes, and grooming tools. Instead of using single-use plastic products, opt for reusable and sustainable alternatives. For example, you can use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for food and water, choose a biodegradable litter box made from recycled materials, and use a natural bristle brush for grooming.
- Practice Responsible Cat Ownership: Being a responsible cat owner means taking steps to ensure your cat does not negatively impact the environment. For outdoor cats, make sure they are spayed or neutered to prevent overpopulation and the resulting strain on local wildlife. Keep your cat indoors during peak hunting hours, which are typically dawn and dusk, to reduce their impact on local wildlife populations. Additionally, always pick up after your cat when they go to the bathroom outdoors to prevent the spread of disease and protect local ecosystems.
- Reduce Energy Consumption: Cats are notorious for napping, and indoor cats often spend a lot of time lounging around the house. Make sure to reduce your energy consumption by turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and by using energy-efficient light bulbs.
Every year I create a new variation on this design AKA recycled content :-). This was last year’s but this year I opted to create something new.
I leave you with an Earth Day Poem for humans inspired by the wisdom of cats.
In the garden, cats do play,
On Earth Day, in their own sweet way.
With tails held high and eyes so bright,
They revel in nature’s pure delight.
They chase the wind, they stalk the bees,
They dance with joy among the trees.
Their graceful leaps, their playful paws,
In harmony with nature’s laws.
Their purrs are like a gentle breeze,
Their eyes reflect the stars that please.
They see the world with wonder deep,
In every corner, secrets they keep.
They know the language of the earth,
They sense its beauty, its endless worth.
They teach us to be present here,
To cherish every moment clear.
On Earth Day, cats remind us true,
To honor nature, to renew,
To tread with care upon this land,
To hold its treasures in our hand.
For Earth is home, our sacred place,
A gift of love, a living grace.
So let us join the cats this day,
In celebrating Earth in every way.
