Purrs Needed For Our Boys

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

Domino-feral cat-quote domestic cats

Life with cats can change in a heartbeat. Odin and Domino were due for rabies shots. This was especially valid after Domino and the possum visit (photo posted last Saturday). Our dear mobile vet Dr. G. makes transporting cats into the mobile clinic a breeze if you don’t breathe a word of it. Usually no carriers are needed but if Domino spots even a whiff of anything out of the ordinary he reverts to his former feral ways.

Hubby made the mistake of talking out loud about the V-E-T within earshot of Domino. I heard the rumble of the truck up the driveway and Domino disappeared under the bed. We didn’t want to miss our appointment so brooms came out and we gently corralled our patient into the corner. Hubby picked him up and like a Ragdoll, Domino tends to go, if not limp, non-resistant. He endured a long but necessary examination as the ideal patient but hid after the ordeal until evening. He then nuzzled up to Merlin in bed. Hubby brushed them thinking all was back to normal and Domino tore a strip off his hand. Was he angry for carrying him into the arms of the vet? Who knows but it reminded me of what anthrozoologist John Bradshaw, the author of Cat Sense said about cats never being fully domesticated. They can revert back to their feral nature.

Meanwhile, an hour before the appointment we noticed Odin limping. He was fine the day before. Unlike Domino, Odin is a squirmer and will not win any prizes for best patient. I thought it best to corral him in the bathroom while Domino was being examined. I knew something was not right when he made no effort to escape from the room. He entered the Sleepypod carrier from the top without a whimper and I carried him inside the clinic. There was no time to X-ray him since it required sedation so a most fascinating exam exploring mobility, palpating and range of motion resembling a yoga class ensued. It’s times like these an old school vet brings peace of mind.

Odin hated every second. It appears that Odin has suffered an injury to his hind ankle. If he’s not better in a couple days, it means a fracture is likely and he’ll have to be X-rayed and the whole nine yards. I’d never seen Odin so distressed. He received a shot of pain-killer. As a pet parent you want to keep them safe. I racked my brain trying to remember something. How did this happen? He climbs trees all the time. Then I remembered, we’d left to to see a friend’s film premiere the evening before. When we returned I noticed a tray of cosmetics and other objects on the floor by my dressing table. It sits under a window with a primo view of our driveway. Had Odin knocked the items over on purpose or by accident? Odin has never had an accident or injury from all his years of tree-climbing. Did a poorly timed jump from my dressing table do him in?

We’ll never know, but he’s in a sorry state and could use some purrs. His one eye is mournful in disbelief how did this happen mom? He’s hardly budged from the security of his Googie Bed and his usual high energy mood is down in the dumps. We’ll report an update on Mancat Monday. Merlin sailed through oblivious to the drama. Thank the cat gods for small mercies.

You probably already know, but in case you don’t there is a memorial commentathon for our friends at Sparkle Cat today.
