The Modern Cat Mom Is Not What You Think
The Modern Cat Mom Is Not What You Think
Once upon a time, the phrase cat lady conjured up a very specific image: an eccentric older woman in a bathrobe, surrounded by dozens of cats, muttering to herself while opening another can of tuna.

Thankfully, we’ve evolved.

These days, cat moms come in every age, aesthetic, and lifestyle imaginable. Some are glamorous city girls with designer handbags and a spoiled Bengal named after a Greek god.
Some are tattooed artists, cottage gardeners, busy professionals, introverts, healers, or travelers who simply prefer feline energy to chaos.

And honestly? Cats themselves have changed culturally too. They’ve gone from being vaguely mysterious household pets to full-fledged internet royalty.

A few fun facts for fellow cat people:
– More households in the U.S. have cats than dogs.
– Cats can recognize their names… they just sometimes choose to ignore you.
– Purring may actually help promote healing and reduce stress.
– A cat’s slow blink is considered a sign of trust and affection. (Yes, the famous “kitty kiss.”)
– Orange cats have a reputation for being lovable little chaos goblins, while black cats are statistically less likely to be adopted despite being absolutely magical.

The modern cat mom is also less interested in “ownership” and more interested in companionship and coexistence. Cats are not tiny employees sent here to obey us. They are tiny emotionally complicated roommates with excellent boundaries.
And unlike dogs, cats tend to choose you. Their affection feels earned. When a cat curls up beside you, follows you from room to room, or sleeps near your feet, there’s a quiet sense of trust that can feel deeply grounding.
Of course, not every cat mom fits the stereotype of being endlessly nurturing or obsessed with matching pajamas and birthday parties. Some of us simply appreciate the comfort of another living being sharing the space. A soft presence in the background. A creature who understands the sacred art of silence, observation, and afternoon naps.

As for Lumi, she continues to settle in beautifully and has fully embraced her role as household supervisor. She and Otto are good friends now on adventures indoors and out.

So this Mother’s Day, here’s to every kind of mothering energy — whether directed toward children, animals, art, gardens, community, or simply creating a softer and more loving world around us.
And yes… the cats will still pretend not to care.
