Here comes the (cat) bride at your purrfect wedding
Can Your Cat Be Part of Your Wedding? How to include your cat in your wedding and the alternatives. Well, maybe not exactly as these vintage and funny illustrations but enough to inspire you.

Dreaming of seeing your beloved cat in your wedding photos or even at the ceremony itself?

While dogs often steal the spotlight at weddings, many cat lovers wonder whether their feline family members can join the celebration. The short answer is yes, but only under the right circumstances.
Whether your cat should attend depends far more on their personality and comfort level than on how adorable the idea may seem.

Should Your Cat Attend the Wedding?
The first question is not whether your cat can be part of your wedding. The real question is whether your cat would actually enjoy it.

For some cats, the answer might be yes. A confident, social cat who greets visitors at the door and takes every household disruption in stride may be perfectly happy making a brief appearance.

If the wedding is being held at home, where the cat is already comfortable and familiar with the environment, that can make things much easier.
Why Weddings Can Be Stressful for Cats
Even then, weddings bring a lot of change. Furniture gets moved. Decorations appear. New scents arrive. Friends and relatives fill the house. Music plays. Doors open and close constantly. What feels festive to us can feel overwhelming to a cat.

Signs Your Cat May Be Comfortable
If your feline friend is genuinely comfortable around strangers, a few wedding photos, a festive bow tie, or a floral collar might be enough to make them part of the celebration. Some cats have even attended ceremonies, but these tend to be the exception rather than the rule.

Important Safety Tips for Wedding Day
A few practical reminders:
- Never force a cat into a costume or role that causes distress.
- Keep toxic foods or flowers like lilies away from Felix.
- Always provide a quiet retreat away from guests and activity.
- Keep doors and windows secure to prevent accidental escapes.
- Watch for signs of stress such as hiding, excessive grooming, flattened ears, or attempts to flee.
- Remember that a happy cat is far more photogenic than an unhappy one.

Safer Ways to Include Your Furbaby
For many cats, the best role is an honorary one.
Their image can appear on invitations, wedding websites, place cards, guest books, cake toppers, signature cocktails, or reception décor. A framed portrait of a beloved cat can be a sweet tribute, especially for cats who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
Some couples even include their cats in engagement photos or mention them in their vows.

Cat-Inspired Wedding Vows
I promise to love and cherish you as much as I love our cats, Lumi and Otto. From this day forward, I will faithfully lint-roll the furniture whenever your family—especially your mom comes to visit. I will love you in sickness and in health, as long as you share litter box duty. I promise to cuddle with you as often as I cuddle the kitties and to sneak you a treat whenever I give them one too.
I promise to extend compassion to all living things, whether they have two legs or four. Wherever our journey leads us, we will live, learn, and love together—forever purrfect.
Your Cat Doesn’t Need to Walk Down the Aisle
In other words, your cat doesn’t have to walk down the aisle to be part of the day. Or wave goodbye as you head to your honeymoon.

After sixteen years of writing Cat Wisdom 101, I’ve learned that cats are part of the family and are happiest when we respect who they are rather than who we wish they would be. A wedding should be a joyful experience for every member of the family, including the four-legged ones.
So if your cat spends the entire celebration napping in a sunny bedroom while the festivities unfold elsewhere, don’t be disappointed.
Maybe this can be a purrfect memory.

That may be the most authentic wedding role a cat could possibly choose.
What would you choose?

We had photos of some of the shelter cats on the name cards for our wedding, And our officiant weaved in some cat-inspired language into her message. 🙂

I love that you did that!

Back in 1992 when we got married, I wasn’t into cats. I would so include cats in a wedding now. XO

I bet you would in fun, creative ways!

I simply had the photographer take pictures of Takanumi in my lap while wearing my wedding dress in my bedroom. It was the best way to include him, and really, the only way. Anything more and he would have been most upset.

That’s a great idea! A shedding cat like black hair on a white dress might be a issue.
