5 Fab Ways to Show Your Cats #Hillspet Love

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

#Hillspet Food is love

How do you show your cat you love them? In the U.S. many of us think we are showing our love by over-feeding our pets food or treats. Ironically, it’s doing the opposite. Over-feeding means overweight pets and that means an increased health risk for many diseases from diabetes, arthritis to heart disease. When a pet is diagnosed as overweight many pet owners feel guilty. Now what? So many questions. What could I have done differently? Is it complicated feeding diet food? Will my pet go hungry? Can they still have treats? The easy answer is, relax and listen to your vet and proven stats.

I was lucky to be invited to a small private lunch session hosted by Hills at the Blogpaws pet bloggers conference recently. It was a chance to meet in person some of the dedicated team at Hills. Their passion for their own pets was clear and I felt the love. It gave what might be viewed as a large corporation, a face, a heart and a furry soul. I especially enjoyed meeting Lori Smith who has been my contact at Hills for the past two years, and she’s been with Hills for over 20 years.

Cat Wisdom 101’s 5 Fab Ways to Show Your Cats Love

#1) Love. Give your pet the gift of health with a vet wellness visit. This means going to the vet before there are signs of an illness. Remember cats are clever at hiding symptoms of illness. If your pet is 7 years and up, establishing baseline senior profiles will help down the road preventing illness. Prevention not only helps your pet but your pocketbook. Prevention is usually less costly than treatment.

#2) Love. Affection. We’re all busier than ever. Nothing is more valuable than time. Give you pet special one-on-one time for cuddles, snuggles, petting, skritches and massages. If your cat likes being on your lap, watch TV together. Multi-tasking can work. Some cats like to help you while you’re on the computer. My cat Domino like to play a game on my husband’s cell phone while sitting on his lap and watching TV together! All our cats consider grooming “love time”.

3) Love. Interactive Play. Another great bonding time. It doesn’t matter what the game is but have fun and be creative. Play hunter and prey with wand-type toys, dangle some peacock feathers, throw catnip mice or balls. Get down on your pets level and notice what they notice. Homemade or improvised toys like toilet paper rolls or dragging an old scarf on the floor all work, just don’t use your fingers or feet as toys.

#4) Training. Most cats can be trained and some really thrive with basic training. It deepens the animal/human bond and it might even save their life. Teaching cats the basic commands to come, sit and stay are useful if they happen to slip outdoors or need to be located during an emergency. Training a cat to walk with a leash and harness is a safer way for them to enjoy the outdoors.

#5) Mi casa es su casa. Our homes are our cats’ home too. Make sure it’s as comfortable and safe as possible. Keep it clean with non-toxic products. Keep any dangerous items locked up or out of reach. Have cat friendly places for them to hide, nap, perch and scratch in low and high locations.
