Mancat Monday: Frozen Love

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

LOL cat winter vintage

Forget the movie Frozen, it’s brrr, crazy cold, freeze your tongue in mid-lick kind of cold, for real. And yes, that’s a real LOL cat from over 100 years ago. It’s your old and cold host, Merlin who is snuggled under the covers as I speak. Normally I love to go out for some fresh air therapy but our recent cold snap is too much for me even with a coat. I’m wise enough to know my limits but I can’t say the same for Odin and Domino. I can understand Domino wanting to go out. He’s built like a walrus and lived outdoors for seven years as a feral, but he’s no fool. He loves a taste of the cold but you’ll find him most days snuggled on top of a shearling-covered electric heating pad. Odin is our official snow cat and contender for the feline iditarod. (joke). I swear he was a Siberian husky in another life.

Odin LOVES the snow and cold but our responsible parents balance his love of the outdoors with their love of safety. No cat no matter how conditioned and willing go outdoors in severe cold weather must not go out for more than a few minutes. Frostbite is a real danger. Odin has coats and sweaters but doesn’t like them. He whines like a desperate dog for the front door to open and every single time bolts out full throttle sprinting twenty feet in a happy dance. How can we refuse him? It’s a treat that’s monitored every few minutes. The door opens and someone calls, “Odin” and he saunters inside his tail high up and happy. Even on the coldest days, when Domino stays in, Odin goes out at least twice. Is it crazy to indulge his craziness or is it love? How cold is it where you live?

Indulge them. Merlin is the only wise one of the group-wisdom comes with old age, and he probably doesn’t even know there’s snow outside, so he’s not tempted.Yesterday it was 80 in Houston and tonight it’s 36. We have such extremes that mine are inside all the time, but I do put out a covered carrier with blankies inside and a bowl of wet food for night visitors I never see, and the food is always consumed.

Under the covers is the best place to be when it is super cold Merlin. I have to admit though that I go out 4 or 5 times a day. Mum tried to keep me in at first but I scratched at the door and kept crying to go out. I only stay out for a few minutes at a time though and our temperature is not cold like yours. We are around freezing or just below with no snow.

Our temps are just above freezing so not too bad. Austin is like Odin and loves to be outside. He would have to go out at least once a day whatever the weather. I have noticed this winter though that he doesn’t spend as long out as he used to, but that could change as the weather gets warmer!

My gardening companion Tommie doesn’t even signal that he wants to go outside. He usually stands on his hind legs and bangs with his big polydactyl paws on the glass of the sliding door. Now he looks at all that white stuff on the deck and goes back to his warming pad bed. I’m glad, I don’t want to go either. It was 4 degrees this morning.

We can go outside in our catio as we want during the day : we have a cat flap. When it’s really cold (0 C or less), Pixie just goes out to be sure it’s freezing cold and goes back inside after a few minutes ; I like to stay longer and do my catio patrol before going back inside. I don’t care about snow, but Pixie doesn’t like it (it’s hilarious to see her trying not to get her paws cold and wet in the snow !). We think you’re not crazy, Layla, you just love Odin and know he enjoys his short trips in the snow. Purrs

I have been debating on trying to get my feral gang into the basement. They seem to be ok and have warm shelters and they stay in them but I still worry. I have been sick with worry about all of the ferals everywhere and all of the animals period. People are SO STUPID!!!!!
Maybe one day they will allow us to spay and neuter that.
Stay safe everyone and help a feral if you can, any shelter is better than no shelter.
    Luvs to all,

We’re very cold in Iowa with lower remps ahead. We all love cuddling indoors. The “fur kids” are very happy with an open window when it’s warm. Good thing too, there is no safe outdoors were we are now.
We feel awful for the strays we feed

  • Annabelle

OH that Odin look at that happy sprint as he makes it to the curve in the snow! It’s cute seeing his tail as he greets Domino.
We hate to say it but our windows and doors are open and it’s probably going to be close to 70 today. But we are in for a change tomorrow. Cold front moving in and dropping our temps into the 50’s which I know to many is warm. We hope everyone stays warm inside and has no problems.

  • Tamago

Goro loves to go out (on deck) no matter how cold it is, too. We are expecting some freezing rain and possibly snow here this week.
Love the photos of Odin running in the snow 🙂 Stay safe and warm!

Wow, it’s great to have boyz (or girlz) who love to go out in the winter (for a wee bit of fun).

Our boyz, especially Mao — but also Ched — sit at the window and just look out.

I’ve never seen them sit at the window and stare at the snow. They realize it’s different, but don’t ackshully know what it is.

Sure, we’ve had snow before, but they never saw so much and saw it blanket everything.

They have no idea how cold it is. Snow and the temps.

We had 6 feet in three weeks and another foot on Sunday. More tomorrow, Thursday and the weekend.

More snow than Boston has EVER had. Truly a Montreal experience. Even the Montreal nightmares that are common.

    It’s 16 F, feels like 3 F. I see that NYC is currently 14 F and that Montreal is…. – 6 F.

On my list of cities I keep track of on weather.com, Montreal is the coldest. Colder than Warsaw even. Often colder than Moscow. Toronto about the same as Boston.

    • Kathryn

oh, currently it is 6. The high will be 16.

I have my Sorel Caribou boots ( I wear them in the house, too, so I dont have to change into them) that I bought in the horrid winter of 2010-2011 (my thought was, OK, Boston, if you’re going to give us Montreal winters, I better get REAL boots.)

My big, long faux mink coat, an angora beret, thick scarf I wear in the house, long johns and thick stretchy workout pants. I’m missing my best gloves, so I will get a new pair one of these days – some really good mittens and gloves from a ski shop, etc.

      • Kathryn

        You’re right !

That is so true about what the boyz know. They see white. Everywhere. I’ve never seen them like this. Usually, they only take notice when the birds chirp.

        xoxo

Is it crazy to indulge his craziness or is it love? I think you already know the answer to your question, although the question of is it crazy or is it love has been written about since human’s began to record their feelings. Love has inspired a great deal of beautiful crazy in story, song and deed. Everyone from Shakespeare, Da Vinci and the grandmother that dances around the high chair, singing about eating beets, have enriched the world with crazy love. Without the crazy that love has inspired, imagine how dull and dark this world would be. So, the simple answer is, yes, it’s love when you open the door for Odin. It’s love that laughs when he runs our the door, full of joy and excitement to greet the world outside. And it’s love that worries about his wellbeing in the cold and wet. Love that lets go while still doing everything possible to protect and trying to do both, that’s crazy.

How cold is it where we live? Here, in southeastern PA, it’s stupid cold. I fail to understand why anyplace outside the Arctic Circle needs to be so cold.

Thank you, all, for making me think.

  • Sammy

Oh the boys are happy indoors OR out. Sam enjoys a 60-120 second “out” on the front porch but is more than ready to come inside, energized and full of zoom afterwards. I can’t deny that either – at least his paws are on the porch and not on the snow or ice! Merlin – you are the smart one my man!

    Hugs, Pam (and Sam)

  • Sue Brandes

Love the photos. It’s been 10 below zero with windchills the last couple of days. Says today going to be the warmest of the week. 18 degrees. LOL. Have a great week.

  • prancer pie

We can’t believe you kittehz braved the cold and snow! We rarely have it and don’t even venture into the catio when it’s below freezing. Brrrr!
Now run back inside and have some nice warm treats!
