Black Cat Awareness Month: Founder’s Guide
Black Cat Awareness Month: Founder’s Guide by Layla Morgan Wilde
When I founded Black Cat Awareness Month back in 2011, I never imagined it would become the grassroots phenomenon it is today. What started as a simple idea to shine a spotlight on overlooked black cats in shelters has blossomed into a global celebration that transcends anything I could have dreamed up on my own.
How a Hashtag Changed Everything
The #BlackCatAwarenessMonth hashtag has truly taken on a life of its own. Every October, my social media feeds explode with thousands of photos of gorgeous house panthers, adoption success stories, and creative tributes from cat lovers worldwide.
Shelters, rescues, and major pet brands have embraced the movement, creating their own campaigns and events. It’s humbling to see something that began at my kitchen table now trending across multiple platforms and reaching millions of people.
What touches me most is how the community has made it their own. Artists create special black cat artwork. Photographers offer discounted sessions for black cat adoptions. Local cafes host black cat adoption events. The creativity and passion people bring to celebrating these magnificent felines never ceases to amaze me.
The Mission That Matters
At its heart, Black Cat Awareness Month addresses a real problem: black cats consistently face longer shelter stays and lower adoption rates due to persistent superstitions and the myth that they don’t photograph well. (Anyone who’s successfully captured their house panther’s beauty knows that’s nonsense!).
By dedicating an entire month to celebrating black cats, we’re actively working to dispel these harmful myths and give these deserving cats the recognition they need.
Ways to Celebrate Black Cat Awareness Month
Whether you’re a devoted black cat guardian or simply an admirer of these sleek beauties, there are countless ways to participate:
Share Your Black Cat’s Story- Post photos and stories of your black cat using #BlackCatAwarenessMonth. Your house panther could be the inspiration someone needs to adopt.
Foster or Adopt – If you’re ready to add a feline family member, consider opening your home to a black cat. October is the perfect time to meet your new best friend.
Volunteer at Your Local Shelter- Spend time socializing black cats, helping them show their personalities to potential adopters. Take quality photos of them to improve their adoption profiles.
Donate or Fundraise- Many rescues run special Black Cat Awareness Month campaigns. Your financial support helps cover adoption fees, medical care, and promotional efforts.
Educate Others- Challenge superstitions when you hear them. Share facts about black cats’ wonderful qualities and the discrimination they face.
Host a Black Cat Event- Organize a black cat photo contest, fundraiser, or adoption event in your community.
Support Black Cat Content Creators – Follow and engage with accounts dedicated to black cat advocacy. Amplify their important work.
A Personal Thank You
To everyone who has embraced Black Cat Awareness Month and made it what it is today – thank you. You’ve proven that when people come together around a cause they believe in, real change happens. Together, we’re ensuring that black cats get the love, respect, and forever homes they deserve.
Here’s to another October celebrating our magnificent mini-panthers. Let’s make this year the biggest one yet!
Much love,
Layla

My cats are so neurotic! I wonder if they have some schizo disorder because they say they can hear voices in the walls and under the floor boards

My cat has some big swangin’ balls, not sure if I should neuter the poor fella. Feels wrong taking those melons away from him

We’ve loved several house panthers and the way I help now is by volunteering at the cat shelter.

Thank you! Volunteering is so needed and satisfying.
Memories of Eric and Flynn
I love black cats too. Before Eric and Flynn we had two black cats that were brothers, the third was a tuxie. We had 10 cats and they all got on well together. Sometimes the three brothers would have what looked like a serious fight with fur flying everywhere. Five minutes later they were sleeping peacefully in a nap pile. Maybe the fight was to see who had to be at the bottom of the pile because it often ended up six or seven deep!
