Meet Lumi, our New Cat Wisdom 101 Family Member
How a dainty tuxie girl cat captured our hearts and a new forever home.

For fifteen years of blogging at Cat Wisdom 101, I’ve shared my home with anywhere from one to six cats at a time. Usually, we hover around four. But life has a way of changing those numbers, and a year ago, we found ourselves down to just Odin, my one-eyed wonder cat.
Odin was fourteen, fiercely independent, and seemed perfectly content on his own. He was the picture of health—athletic, adventurous, always slipping through the cat door with his GPS collar blinking as he explored the neighborhood. I didn’t think he needed a companion.
But watching him, I started to notice something. A loneliness, perhaps. So two years ago, we adopted Otto, another fourteen-year-old tuxedo. They bonded beautifully, two senior cats who became genuinely close buddies.

Then everything changed. Odin, who had always been so healthy, was suddenly diagnosed with jaw cancer. It happened shockingly fast. Within weeks, he was gone—heartbreakingly, on the same day we lost another of our cats, both in November.
Otto was grieving. I could see it. And while I didn’t want to rush into adopting again, it became increasingly clear that he needed companionship.
The Search
Around Christmas, we started visiting local shelters. We went three times to one, twice to another, looking and looking. Every time we thought we’d found the right cat, they’d already been adopted or weren’t available yet. It was frustrating. We finally lucked out at the excellent Paws Crossed Animal Rescue

Right after New Year’s, we visited Paws Crossed Animal Rescue. We’d gone specifically to meet a female tuxedo but she had just been spayed and was still recovering. Instead, we were introduced to another tuxedo named Liliana.

She was only five years old and had recently arrived from another shelter. What struck me immediately was learning she’d been there for a full year—and depressed. She responded positively to her new lovely spacious cat room with just one other feline companion.
Here’s the thing: my husband was far more eager to adopt than I was. I’ve never been particularly drawn to female cats. But he felt an instant connection with this sad little tuxedo, and honestly, who was I to argue with that kind of intuition?

We said we’d think about it and return the next day. We even brought a carrier, just in case. My husband looked at me and said, “Screw that. Let’s bring her home.” So we did.

The Easiest Adoption & Introduction Ever
I’ve introduced countless cats to each other over the years. I know the protocol: separation, gradual exposure, careful monitoring. I had it all planned out.
Then they accidentally met on day one. One small hiss. She wasn’t remotely fearful. That was it. She was comfortably at home within 24 hours.

I realized immediately that I wasn’t going to need my usual careful introduction process. This was, hands down, the quickest and easiest cat adoption and adjustment I’ve ever experienced. They took to each other almost instantly.

Now Lumi and Otto hang out together, chase each other around the house, and play like old friends. They’re not quite at the sleeping-close-together stage yet, but if this early indication is anything to go by, I think they’re going to be very close companions. A queen and her King.

We changed her name to Lumi—Finnish for “snow,” honoring my Finnish heritage. She’s incredibly pretty: tiny and dainty with classic tuxedo markings and the sweetest little pink nose. And she’s smart. Crazy smart. She is a cuddlebug, curious about everything and
obsessed with birds.

Like many female cats she already rules the roost.
Perfect Timing for Tuxedo Appreciation Day
As it happens, I’m posting this on January 29th—Tuxedo Cat Appreciation Day. What better time to introduce our newest family member? Both Lumi and Otto are proud ambassadors for tuxedos everywhere, showing the world just how wonderful these dapper cats can be.
I never thought I’d adopt another cat after losing Odin and watching Otto grieve. But here we are. Otto has his friend, and I have yet another reminder that cats have a way of choosing us just as much as we choose them.
Sometimes the cat you didn’t know you wanted turns out to be exactly the cat you needed.

Welcome home, Lumi. HappyTuxedo Cat Appreciation Day.
