Loony Feline Monday

We just had a full moon and Layla said, I was acting loony. Apparently 42.19 % of pet parents report loony behavior in their cats during a full moon such as…

increased vocalization. Guilty as charged. Staring intently at nothing. Maybe. Running around like crazy. No, I’m too old for that. Displaying more aggressive behavior. Me, aggressive? Never! I’m a lover not a fighter.

However, one 2007 study on canine and feline emergency room visits in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical reported an increase in emergency room visits for pet cats and dogs during the full moon. But this is something to keep in mind, if you have cats who act like lunatics around the full moon. Since cats often mirror their humans’ behavior, it makes sense. I know Layla is way more hyper and sensitive during the full moon and especially the day before, so I can blame my behavior on her hehehe.

Do you or you cats go a little loony during the full moon?

  2. Merlin, we know and we aren’t telling the human over here! MOL! Seriously, she can’t figure if it’s the moon or the fact that the humans are Changing Things in our HOME. (You know how we kitties are not fond of change – especially Faraday, who was UBER vocal on Monday…)

  5. Flynn is always more vocal around the time of the full moon. He will walk around the garden at night yowling his head off.
I never gave it a thought until this post, Eric very rarely plays, it is too much like hard work. For about 4 mornings in a row he has been awake early and been batting mousies around like there is no tomorrow. He hasn’t done it the last 2 mornings. Maybe the moon has eventually had an effect on him too.

  11. Ichiro is more likely to be awake at all hours and talking a lot! The rest of us are pretty low key about it.

  12. Is that why they are acting so crazy??Lenny has been almost bouncing off the walls. FYI: people with dementia also become very agitated during the full moon. Go figure. It’s got to have something to do with that gravitational pull, just like with the tides.

  18. Maybe it was the full moon, but the big black cat jumped into the jeans drawer as I was putting away the clean pants. Well, I don’t have the heart to shoo her out so I left her. She stayed in the drawer until after I fell asleep. I could hear her snoring happily amongst my clean pants. She’s never done this before.

  19. How interesting! I didn’t know full moon can make cats and dogs act loony. My Goro was running around like crazy, but he always does. Haha.
And cats mirror human’s behavior. So true! You can totally blame Layla. LOL!

  20. I don’t know if we do, but mom was tossing and turning in bed last night (that’s what usually happens). Usually she gets up to watch the moon and leave us to sleep with Dad, but there was too much snow in the air to see it.

  21. Merlin is is is very handsome.

My boyz were same as always. Choose one: Sleeping, eating, purring asking me for kisses.

I had a lot of trouble sleeping with the super moon back a few months ago, and so did my sister and her husband – I was visiting them in Montreal – but the full moons don’t bother me.

Was a very pretty moon outside my window. I loved it.

MEWHEEHEE! Merlin mew are as always full of wise knowledge and observations. Can mew get some video of Auntie Layla being hyper during the next full moon, and then post it?! I know all mewz kitty furiends like me would enjoy comparing another kitty’s humab’s behavior to that of our own human’s during a full moon. I wonder: do they all act the same or do some turn in to werewolves too?!? MOL!

    Is *that* what it was!?!

I ought to track the boys’ behaviour in accord with the lunar cycle. Heaven knows my own mental state gets a little crazier. LOL.

  25. Lift my paw up….” I do ”
That’s why mommy have to keep me indoor !
She worry I’m going to turn to be woofie..tee..heh..Silly mom

  26. Oh Merlin you handsome boy you! We all love you to the moon and back that’s for sure………Sammy gets quite wacky during a full moon – maybe a bit LESS wacky now that he’s 13, but always “different” behavior. He flies up and down the stairs in the middle of the night howling…sometimes he goes under our bed while we’re sleeping and makes funny little sounds to get our attention…I guess it’s the WEREWOLF in him! LOL
