W. “Mittens” Bloomfield is an American Shorthair, a cat food critic and a cable-access television personality. After a short apprenticeship at the Culinary College of America’s “Critics at Large” program, his reviews have been featured in The New York Times, Amarillo Globe and Ball of StringMagazine. He is a tireless advocate for better food for all cats.

We’re delighted to share our exclusive Q & A with The Cat Critic. He is as erudite as he is witty and charming. Our Cat Wisdom 101 boys are big fans of his scrumptious foodie blog The Cat Critic where pet pawrents can receive a coupon for $4 off any Merrick Purrfect Bistro dry food bag, or 50¢ off any wet food can at the site.

Q + A with Layla Morgan Wilde and W. “Mittens” Bloomfield

LMW: Being a food critic requires a discriminating palate. How did you train for your job?

WB: Other than a lifetime of eating cat food? I did study briefly at the Culinary College of Americas. As the first cat admitted to the program, I ruffled a lot of feathers (decidedly more than usual). I left after a disagreement with my adviser on the importance of kibble shape.

LMW: What advice do you have for finicky cats?

WB: My advice for finicky cats is to stay finicky. That’s the only way we’ll get the quality of our food to its rightful place. However, to be fair, my feline brethren must be open to new culinary adventures as well. It helps no one to automatically turn up your nose at every new offering.

LMW: Other than fine dining, what do you do for fun?

WB: With my schedule, it seems like the opportunities for fun are few and far between. Besides napping and the occasional cardboard box, I do enjoy reading the classics in their original Romance languages.

LMW: Are you single?

WB: I generally don’t comment on my private life; people seem to assume I’m always on the prowl. But since you asked, I’m currently unattached. It’s tough to find a partner that likes me for me, and not just as an excuse to eat out every night.

LMW: What is you favorite form of exercise or games?

WB: Exercise? I’m more of a mental exerciser. My regime consists of crosswords, Sudoku and gin rummy. I’ve never been one to chase a feather on a stick.

LMW: What advice do you have for pet pawrents?

WB: I can only speak from personal experience. But given a little space, a Merrick’s Purrfect Bistro-style meal and a clean litter box, I think most of us are good to go.

Oscar Wilde famously said, “I have simple tastes. I’m always satisfied by the best.” We couldn’t agree more.
