Grumpy Cat book Review Giveaway-001 Grumpy Cat has done it again and she might be coming to your town. The world’s most famous feline curmudgeon has another New York Times best selling book. A year ago, Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book made the New York Times best seller list. Her second book The Grumpy Cat Guide to Life: Observations By Grumpy Cat, published last month, is sitting pretty on the top of her growing empire. The unstoppable sour puss completed a multi-city book tour last month, is currently in Vancouver filming a movie (out this coming holiday season on the Hallmark channel) and about to hit a staggering 7 million Facebook fans.

One thing that makes me grumpy is the continuing gender confusion. Grumpy Cat is a girl, a female, a lady cat whatever you prefer but a SHE.

The Grumpy Guide, like all books and products from Chronicle Books is beautifully designed. The small hardcover with die-cut window is a charming entree into Grumpy Cat Land. I predict it will be every cat lover’s favorite stocking stuffer this Christmas. The boxed Notecards (4 each of 5 different designs) are a hardcore fan’s delight.

Grumpy Cat’s adoring fans lap up every frown and negative one liners but why? Is it because she dares to say what the rest of us are thinking, at least sometimes? There’s no disputing her other-worldly cuteness but would a positive, less irreverent message be less funny? You bet. Her latest book is a mash-up of every self-help cliche to demotivate instead of inspire. Up ending famous sacred cows like “The journey is the destination” is funny and most of them work.

That said I also think there is room for cat books with a positive, motivational message. After all, the 5 Life Lessons Grumpy Cat Taught Me and 5 Things I learned From Grumpy Cat that wrote last year are cute but true and no doubt inspired someone.

I’ve learned there are copy cats everywhere, you can’t copyright a title or most ideas. We live in a derivative world. All creatives borrow. I’m guilty of borrowing or being inspired by many influences. As Oscar Wilde famously said: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”

It’s funny. Merlin who figured prominently in my cat book and is our most frequent cat book reviewer refused to be photographed this time and behaved like, you guessed it, Grumpy Cat.
