Caturday Santa Sightings+ News & Mews

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

New & Mews

This is a shout out New York Social Diary and Delia Von Neuschatz for her fab and heartfelt article with awesome pics of the largest animal adoption centers in NYC. I love the reframing of the word animal shelter to adoption center.

The idea of saving and protecting the lives of animals is nothing new. The ASPCA was founded in 1886 and the Humane Society in 1904 but we’ve made quantum leaps forward since then but have a long way to go.

As we head into a new year, it our mandate at Cat Wisdom 101 to continue to advocate for the well being of cats everywhere.

We’ve had hectic week with our vet Dr. G. visiting us with his mobile clinic (more about that at our Vet 101 post). Geriatric cats require more frequent visits as do adventuresome outdoor kitties like Odin who is perennially on Santa’s naughty list.

The beauty of a mobile vet is the ease of moving a cat from home to the clinic with cat carriers. Merlin gets scooped up in his Kitty Kuddly and he’s good to go. The rest of the gang can be carried in our arms. Usually. Hubby had Odin in his arms but he wormed his way out and ran for the trees. The metaphor is apt. I’d noticed little rice-like deposits near his anus. The tell-tale sign of tapeworm. Treatment is easy and safe these days with one pill but first he’d have to be caught. Odin is trained to respond to the “come” command but no cat no matter how well trained performs on cue 100% of the time.
“Odin, come!”, I shouted. His head popped up behind the shubbery. Here I am, mom. Now come and get me if you can. It’s the oldest game in cat’s playlist. I moved slowly and nonchalantly towards him. I had no treats on me but I promised treats. We made eye contact and a non verbal communication to stay. Without breaking contact, he stayed put and allowed me to pick him up and carry inside for his exam.
Odin is in exceptional shape, worm-free and as naughty as ever. This week, he whapped a glass blender onto the floor and climbed to the top of a new conquest: an old telephone pole. He lives to climb and his skills are impressive. Thankfully he does listen and come down once he’s scaled the peak of his feline version of parkour to do his second favorite thing: snuggling with mom.
