ASPCA Disaster Preparedness Pets Infographic & Giveaway
September is Disaster Preparedness Month and we’re happy to share a powerful infographic from the ASPCA. Don’t wait for a flood or hurricane, emergencies can and do happen when we least expect it. Just yesterday, I heard a loud crack and went to the window. There was no wind or storm so it shocked me to see a big tree blocking our driveway near the road. It’s a good thing I didn’t need to drive any of our cats to the vet because we were stuck until ConEd removed the tree. Branches from the diseased tree touched electical wires but luckily didn’t impact service. Within a few hours everything was back to normal but it could have been a very different scenario.
It’s been 10 years since Hurricane Katrina. Are your pets safer? Pledge to be prepared: aspca.org/disasterprep Use the hashtag #NatlPrep when sharing on social.
What floors me is that 35% of pet owners still don’t have plans in place for the next big storm or any emergency.
If disaster struck your home or area, would you be ready?
These simple steps can make all the difference. I posted tips recently on taking your cat to the vet last week and would like to repeat, please keep your cat carriers within easy reach and not tucked away in the garage, attic or basement.

My roommates and I are making plans to receive a tornado shelter. We are talking about what we will do if we should have to take shelter. What we haven’t talked about is what we will do if have to evacuate. This is something every pet owner should look into and I plan to bring this up later today to my roomates.

So true. No one wants to think about illness, death, emergencies but being prepared actually reduces stress and anxiety.

Thanks for the reminder. I will try to plan something.

I have enough carriers and the cats eat in them so that isn’t a problem. But then I realized that they won’t all fit in my car.

Thank you for sharing, I learned so much

We hope we are prepared and we hope we never have to find out.

You know there’s a possible CAT1 off the Florida coast early next week?

Very important post. I always worry where I could go with 15 cats if we ever have to evacuate. I have enough crates ( some would have do double up) and one of these days I should do an emergency drill.
Layla Morgan Wilde
With 15, I’d def. double up in larger carrier or dog crates. An emergency drill (calmly) is a great idea.

We know how important this information is. Thanks for sharing and reminding us all to have a plan in place.
Sometimes Cats Herd You
This is a great reminder, especially with a hurricane brewing off of the east coast. We’re in Florida, so we always have some kind of plan, but with the number of people that have to evacuate from the coasts, our plan uses evacuation as the last resort, mostly in case of fire.

we have an sos-backpack with water, food and copies of all important papers. it’s good to be prepared, although we hope we will never need this backpack….

There was a fire not that far from our house a couple of weeks ago, and my human had all the carriers ready and available… then it occurred to her that if she had to evacuate with us, she didn’t have anywhere to go! She needs a better plan, definitely.

Even starting to think about planning is good.
