Urban Tigers Book Review & Giveaway
If it’s Sunday, it must be another book review and another winner. Congratulations to Pam Kimmell, the winner of last week’s Cat and Crow
Urban Tigers: Tales of a cat Vet by Kathy Chisholm is a novel laced with tidbits of true stories from the author’s thirty plus years experience managing her husband’s feline-only veterinary practice in Nova Scotia, Canada. The story follows the adventures of recent vet school grad, Emily McBride’s first year at a feline-only practice in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has a lot to juggle in her new life in a new city: a vet boss everyone puts on a pedestal, cat patients of every stripe (and their owners from heaven or hell), new friends and a less than ideal love life. As an ex-pat Canadian, I loved and felt nostalgic for the Canadian references. Tim Horton’s and Timbits, eh?
The narrative arc felt choppy at times and more like interlinked short stories than a novel but warmth and wit keeps the reader entertained. A healthy dose of vet terminology brought the stories to life and readers will actually learn something about real veterinary procedures and practices. The ending would have felt more satisfying if loose ends were tied into a bow, but I later found out that Kathy is writing a sequel. That made this cat lover purr.
If you like cat stories with a dose of charm mixed with reality, you’ll love Urban Tigers. To buy in the U.S. Amazon In Canada Amazon.ca (lower shipping fees)

Four paws up for Canadian cats! I think it’s fantastic that this is about a cats-only clinic. There are a lot of vets in my area, but I don’t know of any that are strictly for felines (or canines, for that matter.)

Congrats Pam! I love the title, Urban Tigers!
Layla, you posted earlier that you like Children’s Books for relaxing. There’s a wonderful series by Kathleen Hale about Orlando, a marmalade cat with a wife and three kittens:) Martha Speaks is the story of a dog who eats alphabet soup and learns to speak and says things like, “Mom, said that fruitcake wasn’t fit for a dog. But I thought it was delicious.”
