Who is St. After Cig?

St. After Cigs, a pseudonym cloaked in mystery, first emerged on social media platforms, quickly gaining a cult following. The artist’s name itself hints at the idiosyncratic nature of their work—a playful, yet somewhat cryptic moniker that sets the stage for the surreal experiences their art offers.

Despite a heavy internet presence, all we know is the account: Studio After Cigs, which has captured hearts worldwide with their unique “cattitude.”

The artist is a true enigma. We don’t know their name, age, gender, nationality, education. Nothing! This is all we know.

The Artist’s Journey

Studio After Cigs’ artistic journey began in 2021 when they adopted a real-life cat who would inspire the legendary PowPow.

Blending this feisty feline’s personality with their own sarcastic humor, the artist crafts hilarious illustrations celebrating the complexities of cat ownership.

Each piece takes 3-5 days from concept to completion, with the artist’s skill lying in translating distinctive cat quirks and moods into PowPow’s extraordinarily expressive character. The artist is exceptionally prolific: growing their Instagram to 360K within 3 years.

He/she recently took a wellness break from posting and I suspect exciting things are brewing.

The Artistic Style

St. After Cigs’ art is a distinctive blend of small, flat acrylic paintings on canvas with captions. They often featuring cats in a variety of unexpected and whimsical and frankly subversive scenarios.

The cats are not just pets but protagonists in surreal narratives, each piece telling its own story. The artist’s style is marked by vibrant colors, bold lines, and a knack for capturing feline expressions that range from the absurd to the profoundly introspective.

Themes and Motifs

One of the most compelling aspects of St. After Cigs’ work is the recurring themes that weave through their art. These themes often explore the intersection of the mundane and the extraordinary, the humorous and the melancholic.

Cats are depicted lounging in dreamlike landscapes, engaging in human-like activities, or staring into the void with an existential gaze that many viewers find both amusing and deeply relatable.

These humorous quips paired with PowPow’s adorably grumpy expressions have earned Studio After Cigs a growing following on Instagram (@studioaftercigs). But look closer, and you’ll find sly social commentary embedded in the illustrations.

Part of PowPow’s charm lies in his/her delightfully snarky inner monologue and total self-assurance. No stranger to the word: Fuck and other profanities, she isn’t afraid to share her unfiltered thoughts:

“Monday is just a reminder that I have four more days to tolerate humans.”

“I’m not antisocial; I’m selectively social. There’s a difference.”

“I don’t have an attitude problem; you have a perception problem.”

“I’m not lazy; I’m in energy-saving mode.”

“I’m not ignoring you; I’m just prioritizing my nap.”

PowPow proudly embraces body positivity and feminism from a feline perspective. His/Her internet micro-celebrity persona satirizes our cultural obsession with commodifying even cats. Ultimately, this “cat art” contains surprising depth beneath the surface adorability.
