Do Cats Have Souls?
Do cats have souls? I’d like to think so. The French writer Theophile Gautier once said, “Who can believe that there is no soul behind those luminous eyes!” Cats have their own Patron Saint, St. Gertrude (interesting tidbits at this site)
http://www.saintspreserved.com/gertrude.htm It’s the time of the year when some celebrate All Soul’s Day or Dia de los Muertos. On the cusp of November, I like to honor my ancestors and the memory of beloved pets. On our property there’s a grave for Merlin’s sister Coco who died last autumn. I went to light a candle as I did last year, but this year there was snow. It reminded me of another visit there last winter with more snow and inspired this…
Photo quote de jour. Same lanterns, same chair, same votive but all covered in snow. The lanterns are flecked in rust now and the chair further stripped of its paint to remind me how fleeting time is. Everything on this planet ages and dies. Seasons change but nature remains and souls lives on.
Do you believe cats have souls?

I know my cats have souls. I even believe my cat knows what I am saying.

I believe you are correct 100% 🙂

My cat named ‘Tom’ died yesterday morning. My heart is grieving and I can’t believe that Tom’s dead. This cat was very special and make our family laugh every morning and almost every moment. Due to food poisoning, we could not save ‘Tom’. I hope to see Tom again. And it is my prayer to God that please… God, give Tom a soul so that I can meet him again.

I’m sorry for your loss and believe all cats have souls.

I had 2 cats a long time and I feel like they appear to me in my dreams. Especially Dave, the brother of Missy. I dream Im petting him and say his name then I remember that he died and I wake up sad or crying.

Eli, it’s not unusual to have cats visit in the dream state. Consider it a gift of your close bond. If you feel like it’s interfering with your healing journey, you may want to speak to a grief counselor. You’re welcome to participate to my pet loss study, which is series of 70 questions.

My beloved cat, Shay Butterstick, left this earth on August 30, 2017, but I know his soul lives on beyond a reasonable doubt. I have read many many comments on this website reinforcing my belief it is not my imagination Shay lives on.

Peggy, it’s always great to hear an old post still resonates. I’m sorry for your loss but glad you found comfort here. What a wonderful name for your beloved cat.
Oui Oui
We believe all animals have souls. Its what draws us to them, its our connection with them. We aren’t drawn to rocks or water like we are to animals. I think their souls are what gives them their personalities, and its what leaves their bodies when they die. Its the difference between a living animal and a dead one.

Who could ever doubt that any of God’s beautiful creatures has a soul and I know for sure that each wonderful creature that I have ever known and loved has left paw prints or hoof prints or little birdie tracks on MY soul….. >^..^<

I believe all animals have a soul. Today is the anniversary of my beautiful Lilac Point Siamese cat’s death ~ and this morning as I passed his urn in my study, I was drawn to stroke it. I stood and pondered for several minutes thinking about how much I loved and missed him still ~ and then later when I opened my diary I saw it was the anniversary of his death. I think Henry was reminding me ~ he is still here, still with me ~ in fact he never left. His soul lives on.

Jan, we send extra purrs for you today.

I feel them the same as I do the people in my life and those who’ve passed. There’s never been a doubt in my mind.
Abby
Oh yes we believe.
We truly believe that the kitties that pass through our lives wait for us until it is our time to join them, and that we will all be reunited for infinity. Beautiful pictures. Just beautiful.

Abby, thank-you for your beautiful sentiment.
@Brian, we agree with your statement: Humans who abuse and neglect animals are the ones without souls!
@Ms. Kitty Van Dyck, welcome. It’s always a pleasure to meet new cat bloggers.
Brian
That is a silly question, of course we do! Humans who abuse and neglect animals are the ones without souls!

I’ve never doubted that there’s much behind those luminous eyes of the cat – wisdom, humor, love, and most definitely a soul.

” “Who can believe that there is no soul behind those luminous eyes!”
That is one of my favorite quotes. I bought a sweatshirt years ago with a gorgeous illustration of a cat on it (I still have it and wear it frequently), it has that quote on it which is why I bought the shirt.
So YES I vehemently agree that cats have souls.
Your photos are just exquisite, so thought provoking.

Caren, thanks for appreciating my photos. I thought it risky posting two without cats.
@Pam, well said about wisdom, humor, love, and most definitely a soul.
@Fuzzy Tales, you make a good point about “equal value”.
@ Angelina, excellent!
@Ingrid, true, but there might be some non-believers.
Fuzzy Tales
I believe that All Beings are of equal “value,” so that if humans have “souls,” then yes, as far as I’m concerned, cats do as well–as do dogs, horses, etc.
Though I also think the human perception of “soul” is quite limited — how can it not be? Everything is filtered through ego, and ego definitely is limiting.
Ingrid King
Of course they do. How could anyone look into those eyes and not believe that!

I believe. purrr….meow!

Oh yes, Cats have the best soul (s) of all.
Happy All Saint’s Day.
