It’s my birthday tomorrow and I enjoy giving as much as receiving. One lucky Cat Wisdom 101 reader will win a GOOGIE Cat Bed, the ultimate cat bed valued at $250.00! There’s a lot of love to share so we’ll begin with Tom Davies, the Googie bed designer and owner of Davies Decor Tom loves cats and good design so he decided he could build something all cats would love and he’s succeeded. He also has a big heart. When I told him about the hoarding cats rescued at the shelter I volunteer at, he didn’t hesitate to donate a Googie bed for the New Rochelle Humane Society Gala Fundraiser on September 18, 2014.

The fun design and craftsmanship of the Googie Cat Bed first caught my eye at the cat products lounge at Blogpaws. When Tom sent me my own Googie Cat Bed it was like Christmas in July! There was something different about this cat bed. I think it’s because it’s expertly handcrafted with love and not mass produced in some factory in China. Googie isn’t just a great name for a cat. It’s a futuristic style of architecture that influenced mid-century modern design popular now in design circles. My beef with lots of cat “furniture” is they’re often flimsy or not strong enough for human use. The Googie is strong enough for a human to sit on, use as a foot stool or even climb on top of (yes, I did. Mind you I’m only 128 lbs.). The Googie is pricey but built to last. Think of it as an kitty heirloom to be passed on to the next generation.

As a behaviorist, I like to create enriched, feline environments where the decor has multiple uses and doesn’t look like a crazy cat lady lives there. My other cat product pet peeve is anything made with carpet. Most commercial carpet is synthetic and off-gasses chemicals. I prefer eco-friendly options not just because it’s better for the planet but because it’s healthier. Asthma, allergies and environmental sensitivities are at an all time high for people and pets.

Enter the Googie bed carpet which is made 100% post consumer recycled bottles and with and no off-gassing.

At first glance it’s a stand alone, double-decker unit enveloped in soft but strong carpet big enough for two cats with a choice of upper and lower “beds”, but turn it around and

  • it’s a wide, vertical scratching post.
  • Turn it on it’s end and it’s an end-table with easy-clean laminate surface.
  • Place it next to a bed and it’s a stairway to dreamland.
  • Place it next to a sofa or armchair and you can put your feet up while kitty snoozes below.
  • Place it next to a windowsill and it’s a step-up to bird TV.

The possibilities are endless. Odin took to it in a nano-second, climbing on it, scratching and curling into the cozy bottom bunk. He’s a large boy and as you can see, it fits him well. I could imagine two kittens sharing each of the beds. Odin does not want to share it with anyone.

Merlin, who is almost 20 and blind quickly figured out how to use the Googie. We already have lots of step-stool type pieces which are a must have with older cats or any cat hindered by mobility issues.

How will we use our Googie Cat Bed?

I’m expecting to do some fostering soon and scoped our large guest bathroom as an ideal quarantine area. It has three windows but no places to perch so I placed a towel on the windowsill and the cozy Googie bed underneath which I think any foster cat would love.
