The Bright Side of Mystery Cat
For a larger view of this poster visit our Cat Wisdom 101 Facebook page.
Today is Unsolved Cat n’ Dog Mysteries when pet bloggers are posting blogs about an unsolved mystery about their pets. Ours involves the cat (shown above) Mystery Miss or MM. We still have no idea where she lives, but yesterday, our cat daddy heard a thump on the porch. The same sound Domino used to make when he’d jump down from a table next to a window. This was no ordinary window but provided him a TV view indoors and the staircase. Domino would often sit there watching the action the way indoor cats sit and watch the outdoors.
But I digress. Domino watches real TV now indoors so who thumped down on the porch? I missed the show, but apparently MM was spotted scurrying away from the porch and down the path. Perhaps she was visiting her boyfriend Odin? We’ll never know but we have our ears pricked for any thumping.
Oh, to have the hearing a cat. Their two satellite dishes aka ears, rotate 180 degrees thanks to 30 groups of muscles able to zero in on sounds we can’t even hear. Their superior hearing is about five times greater than ours especially at a high frequencies and useful for hearing mice scurry in the walls or rustling in the bushes.
The image is inspired by the song Bright Side of Life from the wacky Monty Python film Life of Brian. We finally figured out an easy way to embed YouTube video for the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrdEMERq8MA&feature=related
but can some tell us how to embed video showing the video screenshot?

Oui Oui
I think MM may be scouting around for a new home too. One of my favorite cats, Robbie (long gone now), visited every day for months, never stayed to eat and always looked well cared for. One day he didn’t leave. I couldn’t find his owner or home and no one came looking for him. Very strange. We’ll have to see what MM does. Odin’s dreams may come true!

Sounds like MM is looking for a new home. She sure does hang out there a lot. Hope she does have a home and gets something to eat. Does she come over the same time of day everyday?? I think the cats hearing is why they are fairly safe outside. They can and do hear danger coming. I know my guys that stay outside a lot are very jumpy some of the time. Take care.

Marg, I feel she has a home nearby and she’s not hungry at all. It’s true about outdoor cats being jumpy and on guard. Domino always slept with one eye open.

Their superior hearing means they are spooked by stuff we never hear! Austin is always looking just past me out the door to the landing and I often wonder ….?
The Mystery M is all the more alluring to Odin, as she keeps him guessing. Women are like that lol

Exactly! Austin and Odin should have hearing contest 😉
@Brian, true, and I loved your post today!
@ Milo & Alfie LOL for the funniest comment today! Alfie has mega-hearing too. He can hear a gnat fart from 500 yards away.
@Ann at Zoolatry, loved your mystery post today!
@Lisa, *s* back at ya 🙂

Oh, sometimes that hearing thing can be a real pain!
Milo and Alfie
Alfie has mega-hearing too. He can hear a gnat fart from 500 yards away! The trouble is, his super hearing makes him nervous ~ and he jumps at the slightest noise. Mom was hoping he’d grow out of this with love and nurturing ~ but he’s 3 now and still highly-strung. Mom says it’s because he was born feral in a field and the first 12 weeks of his lfe (before he was rescued) were scary so he hadta have super hearing powers to survive.
Love Milo xx

Wonderful story … I knew kitties had amazing hearing, but did not know it was this powerful. We, too, have a family (and extended family) of feral kitties who live (albeit not all the time) on our front porch. It is common for the Mom of the group (Carlacita) to jump onto the windowsill, which looks into my husbands home office, and paw-and-meow to him as a reminder that it is dinnertime. Where they go, when they’re gone, is always a mystery to us.
