A Change of Heart Wins Best Catdance Cat Film
Change of Hearts Wins Best Cat Video and other media mews by Layla Morgan Wilde. Cats are everywhere: in film, on television, in commercials and in videos.
We were rooting for our friend Alana and her video Catalogue to win The Fresh Step Catdance Film Festival and she came close. Happily we can enjoy more of her talent and her cat Crepes at her blog Cat In The Fridge After nearly 100,000 votes and more than 1 million film views, cat film aficionados have spoken.
UCLA Student and Filmmaker Wins Best Feline Flick & Walks Away With A “Kitty” of $10,000.
The viewer’s choice winner in the category of best scripted, original cat film is “A Change of Heart.” Filmmaker Balbinka Korzeniowska will walk away with a kitty of $10,000 for her clever story that showed that cat love defies stereotypes. Korzeniowska’s film edged out 1950s-style educational film strip spoof “A Cat’s Guide to Caring for a Human” by just over 1,300 votes.
The makers of Fresh Step litter debuted five original feline flicks in Park City, Utah, on Jan. 19 and then asked America to select its favorite feline film. The voting was part of a larger effort to take the Internet phenomenon of cat videos to a higher level. As part of the program, the makers of Fresh Step litter screened a total of 17 original scripted cat films on YouTube and FreshStep.com.
“While people love camera phone videos of playful kitties, we thought the time was right to task talented filmmakers with creating the Cat Film genre,”said David Kargas, a spokesperson for Fresh Step litter. “And the filmmakers didn’t let us down. The quality of films we received – and the enthusiastic response from cat lovers – just prove that the day is coming when cat films take their rightful place as a celebrated genre in the film world.”
In the winning film, a woman dating multiple men is on date who tearfully tells her his cat has died. Which cat men on Animal Planet do you think it parodies?

I remember this, and it is powerful. It made me mist just now, watching it again. I think that factor might have pushed it over the edge over Catalog. But Catalog was truly charming.
Such a great idea to have CatDance.
Cherry City Kitties

Alana – you have a wonderful attitude and I really enjoyed your video! I really enjoyed the contest in general – it is so nice to see cats portrayed with such creativity in these videos – we thank Fresh Step for introducing us to so many talented, cat loving people!!

Catalogue ROCKED!!! And yes, was completely robbed. Sadly, you just never know how these big name contests will go. Alana is a sweetie and I’m so happy to have “met” her through the magic of the blogosphere.
xo, Glogirly

I’m with you, Catalogue should have been it!
Alana Grelyak & Crepes
Thanks for your kind remarks about Catalogue, Layla. We tried hard and are pleased with the popular response that we got! We couldn’t believe the amount of people that stepped up to support us with their votes and comments. And, Crepes and I started her blog because of it, which is even better. It’s not always about the money. We got viewed, and there’s nothing more a writer and filmmaker could want. – Alana
And I got to wear a sweater. – Crepes.

OH NO YOU WERE ROBBED!!! I LOVED LOVED LOVED your video and am now so happy to meet the kitties (and humans) behind the names we’ve seen so often! I didn’t know Crepes was a special needs kitty – is he OK!?
Layla Morgan Wilde
Tamar, thanks for sharing at IHaveCat. Crepes is Ok 🙂

You’re a winner to us and the good work continues. Purrs to Crepes and a big smoochie from Odin.

I think using cats in a movie must be very difficult, they are not very cooperative if you want something from them. I watched a little the video but only saw a cat at the end when he was singing. Indeed, when you loose a cat it will always stay in your heart, even if you have other cats after.
Sparkle
Meh. That was actually one of my two least favorite videos… there was barely even a cat in it, and it really wasn’t about the cat. I call foul.
