Funny Cat Friends

With multiple cats, like our four, there’s always a dance between cat and cat or cat and human. Every day is different. This week, Odin ran himself ragged outdoors and conked out on the couch. Domino his wrestling buddy who never grooms or snuggles with Odin, jumped up on the couch and furiously licked Odin’s head to wake him up in maneuver resembling CPR. Truth be told, I was concerned about Odin’s low energy and relieved Dr. G. our vet is coming over today. So tired, so dirty or is it so depressed? Mystery Miss has not been seen all week.

Since Domino joined our household, compassion is his middle name. He watches over Merlin, alarmed when he bumps into things and is happiest when he has all four paws around his blind pal and sitting on you know who’s lap. They adore each other in slobberfest fashion enjoying enjoying giving and receiving inter-species massage.

Odin is a silly goofball and plays everyone. Less social or shy cats like Gris Gris need to be respected. Gris Gris who used to be Merlin’s main snuggle buddy watches from the sidelines, slighted. To avoid any issues, I take pains to give GG extra one-on- one playtime and treats during these snugglefests. GG holds his own and doesn’t allow Domino up on the primo radiator cushion which he shares with Merlin. The subtle territorial dance ebbs and flows 24/7. I’m constantly observing their body language and vocalizations. Who is nose kissing who or body-scenting who? Who is play fighting or playing drama queen?

Domino has a distinct chirp to call Odin for their highly stylized and choreographed wrestling matches. Everyone (feline and human) has their individual relationship with each other and collective ones. Not all cats choose to be friends in every household and friendships change. Bonds can tighten or loosen. The more cats, the more variables of the friendship dynamic. It’s up to us as pet parents to observe changes to nip behavioral issues in the bud.

Merlin, the most egalitarian of cats, truly shares his love equally. He often sleeps at hubby’s feet under the covers until he gets up (much earlier than me). Without missing a beat, Merlin crawls into my arms for our special time which necessitates hubby bringing me coffee in bed, “Honey, I can’t move Merlin.” All relationships are about give and take. Cats are masters of friendship with their own species and with others. If they could talk, they might say, “Can’t we just all get along?”
