February 28 is World Spay Day a day to raise awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering cats. Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures that prevent cats from reproducing, and here are the reasons why these procedures are important.

Population Control

The stats are mind-blowing and so avoidable.

One of the most important reasons to spay and cats is to control the population of cats. According to the ASPCA, there are about 70 million stray cats in the United States alone. These cats can cause a number of problems, including overpopulation, disease transmission, and wildlife predation. Spaying and neutering cats is the most effective way to reduce the number of stray cats and prevent these problems.

It’s safe and easy to spay/neuter

  • Cats are neutered and spayed through a surgical procedure that is performed by a veterinarian. The procedures are generally safe and routine, and cats usually recover quickly with proper care.
  • Neutering involves removing the testicles of male cats, while spaying involves removing the ovaries and uterus of female cats. Both procedures are done under general anesthesia, and the cat is closely monitored during and after the surgery.
  • For male cats, the veterinarian will make a small incision in the scrotum and remove the testicles. The incision is then closed with sutures or surgical glue.
  • For female cats, the veterinarian will make a larger incision in the abdomen, remove the ovaries and uterus, and then close the incision with sutures.

After the surgery, male cats can be released quickly while female cats need to rest and recover for a few days. The veterinarian may prescribe pain medication and provide instructions for post-operative care, such as limiting activity and monitoring the incision site for signs of infection. It is important to follow these instructions carefully to ensure a smooth recovery.

Dr. Julie Levy, a professor of shelter medicine at the University of Florida, emphasizes the importance of spaying and neutering cats for population control: “When cats are spayed and neutered, they’re no longer contributing to the overpopulation problem that leads to so much suffering in our communities,” she says. “It’s the responsible thing to do for our feline friends and our communities.”

HEALTH BENEFITS

Spaying and neutering cats also has many health benefits. For female cats, spaying can prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which can be fatal. For male cats, neutering can prevent testicular cancer and certain prostate problems. In addition, spaying and neutering can reduce the risk of certain behavioral problems, such as marking and roaming.

Dr. Richard Goldstein, chief medical officer of the Animal Medical Center in New York City, stresses the health benefits of spaying and neutering cats: “There are many benefits to spaying and neutering your cat,” he says. “In addition to preventing unwanted litters, these procedures can also help prevent certain types of cancer and reduce the risk of behavior problems.”

SAVE MONEY

Spaying and neutering cats can also save pet owners money in the long run. Unneutered male cats are more likely to engage in behaviors such as spraying and fighting, which can lead to costly damage to property and veterinary bills. Spaying female cats can also prevent costly health problems such as uterine infections and breast cancer.

According to Dr. Goldstein, “Spaying and neutering can help prevent a number of problems that can be costly to treat. By investing in these procedures early on, pet owners can save money in the long run.”

SAVE LIVES and Reduce Misery

This is my favorite reason to spay/neuter. The world is full of tragedy, of things we can’t control but we do have some control. It may seem like such a little thing but to save some misery for one cat and their offspring is everything.

And how about some poetry? Maybe meh but you’ll remember it.

There once was a kitty named Ted,

Whose manhood had gone to his head.

But then he got neutered, And he was all right,

He stopped spraying the walls with all his might.

###

There was also a lady cat named Sue,

Who was full of hormones and feeling blue.

But then she got spayed, she was no longer afraid,

Of unwanted litters and uterine woe.

So let’s all celebrate World Spay Day,

And encourage others to do the same way.

For spaying and neutering is the way to go,

To prevent overpopulation and help cats glow.

###

So if you’ve got a feline friend,

Make sure their reproductive days end,

Spay or neuter them now,

And you’ll never have to meow,

About too many cats around the bend.

###

The Feline Fixer, that’s my vet,

He or she will spay and neuter your cats, you bet.

No more tomcats, no more queens,

Just happy, healthy felines, it seems.

###

Spaying or neutering is a must,

To keep your kitties safe and just,

No more roaming or heat-induced yowling,

Just purring and cuddles, without the howling.

Spaying and neutering cats is a crucial aspect of responsible pet ownership. It helps control the population of cats, has many health benefits, and can save pet owners money in the long run. So let’s all do our part to promote spaying and neutering, and help make the world a better place for cats.

Please note: Almost every community has low-cost spay/neuter clinics so there’s no excuse.
