Oooh, Halloween Art For Black Cat Awareness Month Magic!

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

Happy October and Black Cat Awareness Month! When I created the holiday in 2013, I never imagined it would become an official holiday and take on a life of its own. It’s heartening to see the love, devotion and adoption awareness for our house panthers worldwide.

Enjoy my lovingly curated art, plus:

    • This year I’m committed to sharing daily features and stories all month at @BlackCatsofIG
    • I’ll be hosting weekly events on my Cat Wisdom club on my favorite social app Clubhouse.
    • Today we discuss everything wild, weird and wonderful about black cats. Are Black Cats Really Evil? Seriously, we will speak no evil, hear no evil and see no evil because black cats simply aren’t evil. Join here.

Since the inception of this blog, I’ve shared countless posts about everything black cat from fun facts, unusual black cat art, books, news and so much more. This year I’m committed to sharing a weekly post celebrating black cats in unique ways you haven’t seen before. When it comes to black cats, there is always something new to learn. Let’s get this party started.

Today it’s all about the whimsical Halloween cat art of “ACEO Ryta”. Many years ago I kept seeing these cute little cat paintings online. There wasn’t a website and for the longest time wondered what the hell is an ACEO and who is this prolific Ryta. You’ve probably seen her art but sadly many pieces are ripped off without giving her credit. I wondered if everything was knocked off in China and did Ryta actually exist.

Fact or fantasy?

ACEOs or art cards, editions and originals is a fine-art genre in which miniature paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints are produced on 2.5-x-3.5-inch pieces of paper or blank cards. ACEOs began as a conceptual art project initiated by the Swiss artist M. Vänçi Stirnemann in 1997.

It turns out Ryta does exist and her full name is Margaryta Yermolayeva, born in 1966 near Moscow, Russia. She later moved to Odessa in the Ukraine where she studied art. In her early days, she explored many styles and techniques with an interest in landscapes and architecture. Her early talent and reputation grew with many gallery shows. Several cathedrals even commissioned her to create Russian Orthodox icons.

Everything changed in 2003 when she moved to the U.S. and settled in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ryta started doing more illustration and 22 years ago discovered the huge joy of working small. She paints mostly ACEO sized work in acrylics, graphite, oils, and watercolors in many styles but her most charming (to me) are her cats. Her art, both original or prints are super affordable and available on Fine Art America where the eclectic categories include everything from seascapes, nudes, crows, dogs, sheep, mermaids and lots (hundreds?) of Halloween cats!

Trick or Treat anyone? It’s all a treat, no?

If you love ETSY, you can shop there. Or on EBay Some are available in larger 8×10 and 11×14 sizes too.

Sharing any image online without permission or credit is copyright infringement is theft and drives me crazy. Please support artists. If you happen to see her art shared online without credit, mention her name and or share a link.

Do you sometimes think you are turning into your cat? How cute are those hats? I want one!

I can drive a stick, can you?

Whoooooo or what is the ghost whisperer saying?

Let’s celebrate, educate and advocate for black cats so we can all do a happy dance together!
