Manuka Honey Health Benefits For Cats

If you love cats, sharing makes us purrrr :-)

I rediscovered the joys of manuka honey recently for health reasons, mine and for cats. My cholesterol and glucose levels are high and apparently one, rare kind honey helps. Sweet! I was curious to try it on Merlin’s gums for his chronic periodontal issues. A swab twice a day can’t hurt and can help so we’re trying it out. One jar is 10+ times the cost of regular honey, so it’s not the kind to slather on toast. It’s thick, tastes sweet and natural but with an extra kick. I decided to learn more and it turns out one of our loyal readers not only swears that manuka has helped her cats, she wrote our guest post on manuka honey health benefits for cats (dogs and humans too!) Visit JBBardot.com for her extensive archive on holistic health articles.

We can’t have honey without bees and the use of pesticides is killing wild and honey bees in record numbers. Bees pollinate 71 out of 100 crops that provide 90% of the world’s food. If you live in the U.S. find out what you can do to help bumblebees. Start by stopping pesticide use in your garden. Click here to learn more about bees and pesticides and specifically the most commonly used Neonicotinoids. Let one picture tell the shocking story. The math is simple. Pesticide use= bees dying. Bees dying=less pollination. Less pollination = less food. Globally.

Manuka Honey Health Benefits For Cats

By J B Bardot (originally published as Manuka Honey For People and Pets: Remarkable Healing Properties Destroy Frightening Superbugs Better Than Antiobiotics) JB Bardot

Manuka honey is a powerful antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory agent that kills antibiotic-resistant superbugs such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). Clinical trials have been conducted into its effectiveness against conditions such as diabetes, bladder infections, skin infections, ulcers and cancer. Due to its tremendous antibacterial and antiviral properties, manuka honey powerful action action diseases such as plague and ebola. Honey has been used medicinally for thousands of years in ancient Greece, in China for Traditional Chinese Medicine and in India with Ayurveda. While western cultures have always seen it as a health food, its medicinal properties are only recently being discovered. Researchers now believe that certain types of honey have stronger healing properties than others. Manuka honey is considered to be one of the most potent, and Western medicine is only just beginning to understand its amazing healing potential. Due to the popularity of Manuka honey, some manufacturers have attempted to cash in on the trend by producing low grade honey and labeling it as authentic Manuka Honey. To let consumers know exactly what they are buying, licensed manufacturers have come up with a labeling system known as the Unique Manuka Factor which lets individuals know the strength and potency of the product.

Where Does Manuka Honey Come From?

Manuka honey is produced by imported European honeybees that harvest pollen only from the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium) which grows wild throughout New Zealand and Australia. The Manuka tree is also known as myrtle or the Tea Tree and produces small white flowers that are responsible for the earthy, herbaceous taste associated with Manuka honey. It has become big business for beekeepers in Australia and New Zealand who are now exporting the honey all over the world.

What is Unique Manuka Factor (UMF)?

Unique Manuka Factor, or UMF, is a quality control scale that lets you know the potency of the honey before you buy it. All whole, raw honey has antibacterial properties due to it containing a small amount of naturally-occurring hydrogen peroxide. Manuka honey contains a unique non-peroxide antibacterial compound that gives the honey its remarkable healing properties. Researchers have named this compound the Unique Manuka Factor and established a standard for measuring the potency of different strains of honey…

Editor’s Note: I bought this on Amazon. Let me know if you find it cheaper elsewhere. With the rate of bees declining, expect higher prices and for all honey and more manuka copycats.

Have poor venous circulation. Manuka honey is the only thing that healed a bad ulcer after trying for a year with conventional medicine. Use it for all wounds now. Draws out infection and clears up staff and rashes. Love it.

PepiSmartDog: Manuka Honey helped save mum’s life, after life saving surgery which got infected. Nothing the doctors gave her would stop the infection. Finally she tried Manuka Honey and it worked! We highly recommend it!

We try to have goodies for the bees. Bats are another creature that are in serious trouble. We have become so ignorant in our intelligence. Sad, sad.

I have that exact jar in my pantry..it is an amazing product..used for sores etc as a brilliant antibiotic..bees are in a lot of trouble..i am allergic and yet i make sure i have planted a lot of flowering plants for them to enjoy..our native bee here is a beautiful creature if you google blue bees you will see what a special little guy this is and so pretty..sadly they are being decimated by pesticides which i do not use in my garden and they are also being killed off by wasps..we need to take their preservation seriously as without pollination crops fail..so sad we have this problem …by the way love the new format 🙂 hugs Fozziemum

That is very interesting. I am wondering if it may help Flynn. His teeth have a little tartar but not much, but he does grind his teeth when he eats. Our vet is loathe to put him under anaesthetic so I think it is worth buying some to rub on his gums and see if it makes a difference.
I never use pesticides in the garden and we never use them in the fields either, but all the farms around us do. We have a large amount of bees visiting us. Maybe they sense our pollen is better and safer than elsewhere.

My human wonders if this might be helpful for my human’s boyfriend, whose cholesterol tends to run high, even though he works out daily (hard! P90x) and eats way healthier than my human.
