Did you know more pets go missing on July 4th than any other day? Our friends at Petfinder.com want to change that scary statistic for this year’s holiday.

This week, Canada Day and the 4th of July fall in the same week and many are taking off the entire week to celebrate. While the humans are having fun, cats are at more risk of getting get lost and noise of all kinds will make the most laid back cat skittish. On the menu this week are fireworks. parties galore and thunderstorms in many areas.

What’s exciting for humans can be a nightmare for cats. Loud noise from a live band, cranked up volume on a stereo, thunderstorms or fireworks are no cause for celebration for cats.

Remember cats have a far superior sense of hearing and senior cats are especially sensitive. July 1st in Canada and July the 4th in the U.S. are the big fireworks days but they remain popular throughout the season. During noisy times this summer, provide cozy spots for kitty to hide and turn down the volume. Extra skittish cats can be calmed by Thundershirts, or a thin towel sprayed with Feliway and tightly wrapped around a cat burrito-style. Flower essences like Rescue Remedy offer gentle relief.

With a little commonsense and mindfulness, our cats can enjoy our summer holidays as much as we do. Click here to read more of our July the 4th tips and visit Petfinders for their photo gallery of tips. Happy Independence Day!

Fireworks are sooooooooooooooooooo not good fur us! We hope everyone has a safe holiday and doesn’t get scared by all the noise and/or parties. We will also try to keep a close check on all of the critters in our neighboorhood too. Happy Independance Day to cats everywhere……….BTW it has nothing to do with July 4th…. MOL!

    These are some great reminders!
I especially love the tip about letting summer party guests know about the house-cat rules. We live in a three level townhome and it would be VERY easy for a kitty to slip out with people coming and going.

    thank you for this!

All good advice! We had our neighborhood fireworks show on Sunday… we kitties pretty much ignored it. Paws crossed that no one is stupid enough to set off any personal fireworks in our dry, hilly area on the 4th!

We are very grateful to be indoor kitties, especially during the holidays=we usually hide under the bed when the fireworks start…Happy Wednesday and have a safe July 4th!…kisses…Calle, Halle, Sukki, Mommy Cat, Daddy Cat

Great post to remind those insensitive humans. They have no idea how loud those fireworks are to us cats!

Luckily my mum understands because for a human she has sensitive ears too 🙂

    Have a safe time everyone!

I’m really starting to dislike very much all the fireworks. My cats are usually right next to me or on
    Great Advice
I just thought of this, Canada Day!
That shows more pride than Americans who named ours 4th of July! I know the reasoning, just it’s lost it’s true value as a holiday, from what I see around my area.
That was a rant for sure, I get carried away at times!!
