Giveaway Winner and Strange But True Vintage Black Cat Photos by Layla Morgan Wilde

No matter how long I’ve been curating unusual items to blog about, it never ends. This being Black Cat Awareness Month, I thought I’d do a deep dive into vintage photos of black cats. All required heavy digital editing to make them more purrfect. Which is your favorite?

Drum roll please… the winner of the Kilkenny CatsOriginal Painting giveaway is Jo and Angus from @Angustheofficecat

They live in Canada and Angus is a real working cat. He also happens to be featured in my Black Cats Tell All Book. Can you believe it’s been three years since it was published!? Great strides have been made towards black cat awareness and adoption, but the work continues. It’s always a thrill when buyers in foreign countries post photos on Instagram. At the turn of the century, Louis Coulon was famous for his beard which began growing at an alarming rate as a boy. It kept growing until it reached 11 feet. I can’t imagine the trouble it took to groom, but his cat doesn’t seems to mind a lack of hygiene.

It’s spooky season so, what could be spookier than twins girls and twin cats. Seriously, this is a portrait from 1918 I took liberties with.

The world’s smallest man in 1956, Henry Behrens traveled the world in circuses. His black cat was panther-sized to his height of 30 inches.

Studio portraits with kids in Victorian times often had pets as props.
